The Mallory Kountze Planetarium, located in the Durham Science Center at the University of Nebraska Omaha, is a great place to spend an hour or two. There are shows on Friday and Saturday for the first three weeks of every month. Shows vary in content but are always educational and entertaining.
Planetarium Operator Krista Testin says that the planetarium is not necessarily always about space science and astronomy. Various UNO organizations have used it to host private events like poetry readings with the library to yoga classes with the wellness center.
It turns out a planetarium can be used for a wide variety of things. In the past year, there has been a music release party as well as a wedding that brought the planetarium to full capacity.
Testin says that the unique thing about learning in a planetarium is the sense of immersion that it provides. She likens the experience to watching a movie in IMAX or 3D. Testin says that more than anything else, the planetarium is a teaching environment.
