African Culture Nights bring tradition to UNO campus

By Phil Lemen

Since 2016, African Culture Night has been hosted on UNO’s campus. This year, Sapp Fieldhouse was filled with over 300 people, making it the most successful year since it’s inception.

“I think it was a success because we had so many people show up. I mean we weren’t expecting this many people. We exceeded our crowd goal, so that’s always a good thing because that means that the African community got the message and came out to support,” said Lizeth Mejia Narciso, Secretary of PASO (Pan African Student Organization).

The event consisted of dancing performances such as: Rwandan, Somalian, and Burndi dance teams, and event a stand-up comedian. There was also a huge buffet line filled with catered African food such as: rice, fried plantain, grilled chicken, beef bits, and puff puff.

ACN lasted from 6pm-11pm and it was a good way for diverse backgrounds to express themselves.

“I have a talent to dance, I teach dance classes, so I want to show people that in Omaha, we still have African dancers. I’m here because I love the African vibes, and it’s just a fun environment to be in; I attended last year. I’m glad there are so many supporters here because it’s important to get out of your comfort zone and learn something new.”
