UNO releases annual campus security and fire report

The UNO Department of Public Safety sent their yearly campus security and fire report to all UNO student and faculty mailboxes last Monday.

The 52-page report includes information relating to crime statistics and policies concerning public safety such as UNO alerts, security bulletins and sexual misconduct. All data is submitted to the U.S. Department of Education.

“Our department is committed to the safety of our students, faculty, staff and visitors while on our metropolitan campus,” Public Safety Director Charlotte Evans said in a statement at the beginning of the report. “We value you and are here to provide the best service possible.”

The Annual Campus Safety and Fire Report is a result of the Clery Act, a federal statute requiring colleges and universities participating in federal financial aid programs to maintain and disclose campus crime statistics and security information. The U.S. Department of Education conducts reviews to evaluate an institution’s compliance with the Clery Act requirements.

“The report is important just so they know what’s going on on campus,” Campus Security Captain Mike Murphy said. “It lists all the crime statistics and fire information for the previous 12 months. It’s important for people to know their campus is safe and that we take safety seriously on campus. It tells the university we comply with all the regulations tear the federal government has and that we are in compliance with all those things and that we go above and beyond to make sure that the campus is safe for everybody.”

To guarantee the safety of students, campus security has patrols 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They work with housing and student conduct to ensure that any suspicious or illegal behavior is reported and brought to the attention of the behavioral review team. Security also provides escorts to any building on campus and Elmwood Park.

“Campus security is important because students can go about their day knowing they are protected,” UNO student Grant Rohan said. “Knowing we have these resources available means I’m not alone during an emergency.”
