The UNO dance team won three national titles at the Universal Dance Association (UDA) competition in early January. The team placed third in Pom Division, top three in game-day performance, and top five in Division 1 jazz.
Their successful journey began in the Fall of last year, when they attended a preseason dance camp. The Mavericks brought home an award in the Division 1 Home routine competition, a first place ranking and superior rating.
Mo Marsh, head coach of the UNO dance team, was not surprised by the wins because of all the hard work the woman had put in.
“All year I kind of felt like we definitely had the potential and it was in our hands to live up to that and deliver when executing our choreography,” Marsh said.
Dance team member Abigail Quillen said the dance team put in a lot of practice and work out regimes to make it to the National level.
“In order to do as well as we did at nationals we had three practices a week and a workout on Wednesday. Our practices were 2-3 hours long and they were really intense,” said Quillen.
Thanks to the team becoming more competitive, every year the team becomes more difficult to qualify for This year every girl on the team was from the Omaha area, this is likely to change since 50 percent of the people trying out next year are from out of state.
Head coach Marsh is proud to have a more diverse try-out group for next year. “We’re starting to get recognized outside of our local community,” she said.
The UNO dance team hopes to keep up their reputation by working even harder for next year.
