OMAHA – Every October, the UNO community celebrates Campus Sustainability Month by hosting many events of cleaning around the community.
And despite the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the events continue to be up and running. That includes the many virtual events that have been hosted this year.
This month marked the beginning of the 5th annual Campus Sustainability Month with events that take place across the community that involves a lot of yard work and community service.
“It really allows students to get familiar with these topics. It really elevates it to the forefront of conversations throughout the month. Where some of these things the students may be thinking could go to the back of their minds and kind of behind the scenes,” said Kristina Hughes, the sustainability coordinator at UNO.
While most of these events are virtual this year, Hughes believes that she has had so much help from her coworkers to get all of this set up. It also continues to move with the history that sustainability has had, which Hughes thinks is the most important and the reason why they host these events every year.
“History of Sustainability on campus is really a rich history. We’ve had activities and we’ve had committees. We’ve had staff, students, faculty and voices coming together since about 2008,” said Hughes.
Sustainability has been such an important thing for not just the campus of UNO but also for campuses all around the world.
“We help improve a lot of things because of small factors that we do not consider important that add to the larger picture,” said Malan Mohamed, the sustainability chair at UNO.
