OMAHA – After last season in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) came to an end without a champion because of the COVID-19 pandemic that hit the United States, the hockey season will be set to begin on December 1st.
And even better is that it will be scheduled where players and other team members can be safe.
Last month, the NCHC announced that Baxter Arena would host a pod to start the season off on December 1st. The pod will be expected to run for a total of 20 days.
“Our commissioner Josh Fenton and the NCHC council, which is made up of our athletic directors, was to try to find a safe way to start the season and to ensure that a large percentage of games could get in place.” said Mike Kemp, the associate athletic director at UNO.
Players and team members from the eight teams in the conference will be put into hotels where they can get their finals work done and play their games at the same time.
“We’ve worked with all of our medical experts both here at UNMC. The eight member schools from the NCHC put together some stringent protocols and maintain safety amongst the teams. That will include separation of the teams,” said Kemp.Fans will not be allowed in the stands but family members will be allowed. There will be a streaming service site online for all games.
