Film Streams closed its doors in March of 2020, but has maintained business by creating a digital platform.
Soon after Film Streams closed their doors, they designed a digital space where patrons could stream movies they wouldn’t be able to see otherwise. The website is designed to allow the viewer to rent a movie virtually and have up to 30 days to watch it.
“The reason our theaters are there is to host an experience in a space, to watch these art forms and to see them in the big screen and feel them in that space,” said Film Streams marketing assistant Brenton Gomez. “Film Streams at home, which is our streaming platform, [is] where you can purchase and watch our programming still.”
For over 10 years, Film Streams has allowed students to attend movies for free on the first Monday of every month. Since the pandemic started, they also moved student night to the digital platform.
Students are able to access the free movies by signing up for Film Stream’s monthly email alerts. After signing up, students are able to take the code sent to them each month and apply it within the first week of the month to the payments section. After the code is applied, students have 30 days to view the movie.
“Because maybe some students [think] ‘I have tests’, or ‘I have work then school, school then work, I can’t make it through to Monday,’ so this is something that we’re thinking about for the future, about maybe these two realms kind of live together,” Gomez said, “You may well have the option for digital, you know the digital platform, and then also have the in-theater free films, too.”
The theaters are also allowing patrons to rent out the movie theaters for private viewing. Additionally, “curbside concessions” offer movie enthusiasts a chance to pick up snacks before watching their Film Streams movie at home.
