Dr. Jeffrey Gold, Chancellor of the University of Nebraska at Omaha, announced he would be stepping down from his role this upcoming June. He said the decision came when he was asked to fill a higher position in the board of directors for the University of Nebraska system.
When Gold first announced that he would be stepping down from his position many were curious as to why and what exactly it meant for the future of the University of Omaha.
“It all started when my superiors and I discussed what the logical balance would be for me to retain my position at the Med Center… and initiate the search for the next Chancellor,” said Gold.
Gold also went into detail about the process, explaining that he deemed it unfair to both the University of Omaha and UNMC, both of which he is the head of, to also take up a larger role as a part of the board of directors.
Other individuals such as Katy Carnes, an alumna who graduated while Gold was still Chancellor at the University of Omaha, shared her thoughts about Dr. Gold and said she understood why he made the decision.
“I definitely get why he’s stepping back and why they want to separate, they kind of had different leaders running two rapid growing campuses, but my impression of chancellor Gold is very positive,” said Carnes.
Carnes also expressed that she was mindful about the future of the university and wasn’t quite sure what it will look like after Gold steps down from his position.
Gold gave reassurance to those unsure about the future of the university by explaining that there is a process already underway to find a replacement. The selection process for a new chancellor could take a while but there is a bountiful number of candidates to choose from, he said.
He also emphasized that he would personally guide and counsel the new chancellor for a time so that things go smoothly with the transition.
“There are over 60 candidates all on the national level, of which a very significant number are extremely qualified and extremely capable individuals,” Gold said.
