Big Muddy Urban Farm is an Omaha organization dedicated to making sustainable agriculture accessible to all. Now that spring has arrived, changes are taking place around the farm.
“We are planting a lot of seeds and getting ready for planting season,” said Executive Director Brent Lubbert. “It goes zero to 60 pretty quick. Once the weather turns well you can work with the soil and that means it is ready to go.”
Big Muddy provides hands-on learning opportunities for urban residents as well as some farm tours, but those have been impacted by COVID-19.
“Not being able to host events, a lot of what we do is educational and that requires hosting events and that kind of went by the waste side, but we went to virtual platforms and made some unlikely partnerships and really carried through,” he said.
Recently Big Muddy has started collaborating with UNO classes on service learning opportunities to get more people interested in learning about the farm, which can be a unique experience.
“I am really into environmental sustainability, so obviously they are into farming and educating people about how to farm better, so I was excited for it,” said Diana Munoz, a UNO student.
