Stage doors have reopened at the Orpheum Theater on Sept. 28, 2021, after they had to close due to COVID-19 precautions.
The Orpheum first closed their doors on March 14, 2020, canceling multiple performances.
Joan Squires, president of Omaha Performing Arts, said for many members of the staff and audience it was hard to process the idea of closing the doors for any period of time.
“You know I think when we first closed, we couldn’t believe that’s what was happening, and we thought maybe this would be short-term,” Squires said.
Molly Myers and Eva Wetzel were among audience members who were shocked about the closure.
“It was a bummer, but it was all kind of a bummer,” Myers said.
The Orpheum remained closed for 18 months but that didn’t stop them from bringing the joy of live performances to audiences.
Squires said they wanted to stay in touch with audiences and artists throughout the pandemic.
“So, we did a lot to connect to people and to keep them engaged in music and to help the artists working,” Squires said.
They livestreamed events by working with artists and hosted some outside events to stay connected with their audience members.
The Orpheum reopening this season includes popular musicals such as Dear Evan Hansen, Wicked, and Anastasia.
Myers and Wetzel were thrilled to have live performances back after being away for so long.
“I’m really excited for any and all other musicals and shows they put on. Very hype,” said Wetzel.
The theater is kicking off this season with Cats the Musical which opened on Sept. 28.
Squires said she’s excited for the opportunity to see the interactions that take place when audiences come and experience live performances.
“You know, I’m most excited to be in the theater and to feel that energy of a live performance. The interaction of the artist and the audience, there’s nothing like that and you cannot capture that on streaming or on your device. It really is magic.”
With the excitement of live performances making a return, COVID-19 precautions will be in effect in order to keep everyone safe and healthy.
