Defending Class B softball state champions, Omaha’s Skutt Catholic High School begins its title defense Wednesday at the state tournament against Norris. There are two girls on the team going to play Division I softball, but that’s far from all.
Seniors Lauren and Hannah Camenzind are not only the top two hitters in the Sky Hawk line-up, but they are also identical twins who will continue their athletic careers at Arkansas.
According to the NCAA, there are roughly 25,000 college softball players. 1.8 percent of those players make it to the division one level. Hannah Camenzind said she’s humbled by the opportunity.
“It’s just fun because you get to see all your hard work pay off and all your dreams come true,” said Camenzind.
Hannah said that she and Lauren have dreamed of playing together since they were eight. Since then, they have spent countless hours off the field honing their skills.
The twins are now two of Nebraska’s top softball prospects, but Lauren said when they were younger, she had to force Hannah to the tryouts.
“She didn’t want to go, and she was like whatever we do if we make it, I’m not playing, and we were really bad when we were younger… like really bad,” said Camenzind.
Although Hannah didn’t want to play, Lauren was able to convince her sister to stick it out and has since fallen in love with the grind of the game.
There’s no question the athletes shine on the gridiron. Athletics director Donn Kasner said it goes beyond the diamond.
“Awesome, awesome kids. Hard workers, lead by example, the nicest kids in the hallway and always have a smile on their face. They’ve left a heck of a mark on Skutt Catholic,” said Kasner.
Before they head off to Arkansas, the twins will continue to play for their club team, the Demarini Aces in Kansas City, through November. At Arkansas, Lauren wants to major in journalism and become a sports reporter. Hannah is undecided.
