By Juan Salazar OMAHA, Neb – The UNO Men’s basketball season has begun, starting November 4th where they host their first game at Baxter arena. While the team remains true to the Durango spirit, this years roster features some exciting changes. As we dive into the season preview for the UNO men’s basketball team, we hear from head coach Chris Crutchfield where he talks about the teams new look, and what we can expect for the season.
“The new players filled a void” says Crutchfield. “We lost a scorer, and we lost a couple other guys through the transfer portal. So, we needed another guy that can score. We filled a bunch of holes.” Coach Crutchfield explains how new recruits has made the team bigger and older, as well as bringing in more experience to the front line. The strategy for this new season is a different look for UNO, where they plan to play at a faster pace and place emphasis on three-point scoring.
Seen in a recent preseason exhibition game, Marquel Sutton, a forward for UNO- stepped up to the plate and delivered a masterclass effort by scoring 27 points, shooting 10-for-15 overall. Marquel was recently named an All-League Preseason Player to Watch, and he emphasizes stepping into a leadership role this season. “I can bring a lot of leadership, I’m one of the veterans on the team… I got to step up and be that leader this year” Sutton explains. Sutton also continues by sharing how this year the team has bonded off the court, which is reflected in the team chemistry on court.
Crutchfield closes ends his statement with a positive outlook, “ I really think this is going to be a year where we really make a big jump, not just in wins and losses, but even in the perception of our program.”
