The Mayoral Race Has Begun

By Andrew Coughlin, OMAHA, Neb. – Omaha voters are gearing up for a competitive mayoral election, with the mayor’s seat as the prize. Incumbent Mayor Jean Stothert, who has served since 2013, is seeking a historic fourth term. She officially filed for re-election on February 21, solidifying her place in the upcoming race.

Stothert faces several challengers, including Douglas County Treasurer John Ewing Jr., public health advocate Jasmine Harris, and former state senator Mike McDonnell. Each candidate brings both distinct personalities and policies to the table, at a time when Omaha is facing a political crossroads.

The election process will begin with a primary on April 1, where voters will narrow the field down to the top two candidates. Those two finalists will then go head-to-head in the general election on May 13. With a mix of experienced public officials and fresh newcomers in the race, Omaha residents can expect a certainly spirited campaign season.

As candidates ramp up their outreach efforts, debates over key city issues, including infrastructure and construction improvements, crime prevention, and tax policies are likely to take center stage. Voter engagement will be critical in shaping Omaha’s future, and residents are encouraged to make their voices heard at the ballot box. Omaha residents should stay informed, learn about the candidates, and most importantly, cast their votes in this pivotal election.

With the election quickly approaching, Omaha’s political landscape could see a major shift—or a continuation of Stothert’s long-running leadership. The decision now rests in the hands of the voters.
