Mission: Astronaut” Exhibit Launches at Nebraska’s Strategic Air Command & Aerospace Museum

By Madelyn Gau, ASHLAND, Neb. – Space dreams take flight at the Strategic Air Command & Aerospace Museum, where a new interactive exhibit is transporting visitors from the Midwest to the final frontier.

A Hands-On Journey Into Space

It’s one small step through the museum doors, and one giant leap into the world of astronauts.

The exhibit, titled “Mission: Astronaut,” opened in January at the museum located in Ashland, Nebraska. Designed for all ages, the exhibit offers a hands-on experience of what it’s like to live and work in space. From operating a robotic arm to exploring space farming and astronaut hygiene, the exhibit immerses visitors in the daily routines and challenges of life aboard the International Space Station and future deep-space missions.

Inspiring the Next Generation of Space Explorers

JP Wilson, Guest Services Lead and Education staff member at the museum, says Mission: Astronaut plays a crucial role in educating and motivating young minds.

“Mission: Astronaut has been beneficial in inspiring the next generation of future astronauts and aerospace engineers,” Wilson said. “It shows how you’re able to live in space currently on the International Space Station and in the future for the Artemis missions to return to the Moon and go on to Mars.”

The exhibit also aligns with NASA’s renewed commitment to lunar exploration and its vision for future missions to Mars — offering visitors a glimpse into humanity’s next giant leaps.

International Appeal and Interactive Fun

The exhibit has already attracted international attention. One visitor, Henry Götz from Germany, shared his excitement:

“I feel like this exhibit was very fun with all the interactive elements, and it has a little something for everyone,” Götz said.

With engaging displays and educational simulations, Mission: Astronaut is ideal for families, students, and space enthusiasts alike.

Plan Your Visit

The exhibit is now open and will run through May 18th, 2025. Visitors are encouraged to plan ahead, as it’s expected to draw significant interest during spring and early summer.

Whether you’re dreaming of donning a space suit or simply curious about life beyond Earth, this exhibit is a mission worth accepting.
