Zaire Butler OMAHA, Neb- The Durham Museum hosts many exhibits that have historical value to them, and the Negro Motorist Green Book exhibit is no different for many.

Durham works with the Smithsonians to bring this exhibit to life and bring a different kind of knowledge that many do not know of when it comes to the Green Book. Scott Eastman, the Director of Marketing & PR, provides the interest that the exhibit shows to handle it with care.

“There are dark parts of the story, and tragic parts of the story” Eastman said.

“Really the majority of this story is incredible resilience from a community of people coming together to support each other and fight back.”

The Green Book brings together ideas of the past that certain historical monuments are located, many of which African Americans traveled through the United States to visit areas.

The Green Book being a travel guide that leads to where African Americans travel throughout the sundown towns makes it a unique book that Victor Green brought out for the way to make them feel vital.

“It’s connotation of shame and embarrassment” said Monica Gomez, “Although the Green Book tried to cultivate pride and places of safety and dignity for the black community, it was still something that was kept quiet.”

The Green Book is an important aspect that expands on history of African Americans and their culture that tells more to the story than what is let on. For the protection that they needed throughout the Jim Crow era and the laws.

The Durham Museum provides the knowledge of lost history that makes people want to know more and become more curious, especially in this time of the world.
