MavRadio’s Earth Day broadcast spread environmental awareness

Every year, 8 million metric tons of plastic end up in our oceans. It’s estimated that by 2025 this annual number will double.

More than 60 million plastic bottles end up in landfills daily–totaling to about 22 million in 2018.

Pollution is more than plastic in the environment. Pollution takes forms as the air we breathe, the soil we use, the water we drink and more. One of the biggest problems we have today in the world is environmental pollution.

With a polluted environment, comes a polluted society and world. We created it, but we can also renew it.

MavRadio producer Ryan Fitzgibbons is excited to host MavRadio’s annual Earth Day show on April 19. He said it is MavRadio’s sixth annual show and is a great way to celebrate the Earth, as well as bring awareness to how Omaha residents can help preserve it far beyond Omaha. The show highlights ways in which Omaha businesses are taking steps to reduce plastic use.

“A local restaurant in Benson is drastically lowering its’ plastic straw distribution to customers,” Fitzgibbons said.

UNO geologist Maher explained how climate change is a large issue that needs more attention, and he worries for future generations.

“A lot of people are uncomfortable talking about it, but when you take into account the lives that are impacted by it, that’s the drive right there to deal with this issue and learn ways to help solve it,” Fitzgibbons said. “It has to be talked about, now.”
