OMAHA, Neb.-– Omaha Softball infielder, Jamie White has had quite the journey during her time in Omaha.
The Oklahoma native has been through several coaching changes in her four years on the diamond. White, a senior for the Mavricks didn’t even play for the coach who recruited her but said her visit on campus as well as the promise of new facilities was all it took for her commitment.
“I came for a visit here and right when we pulled up my mom was like this is the one,” she said.
White said the coaching change happened late after last season, so the team had little time to explore transfer portal options. New Head Coach Mike Heard, however, was given nothing but high praise from White and the Omaha community.
“Just the timing, everybody around here saying how good of a coach he is so I didn’t really have any thought into it just to stay and finish out and be here for Omaha,” White said.
White leads the team in batting average, homeruns, and slugging among other offensive categories. She credits her off-season lifting program for the success so far but has other goals in mind.
White said, “Honestly just my mentality is to have fun and it is my last year here so just put it all on the field; just put it all on the field.”
After beginning the first month of the season on the road, the Mavs welcomed fans to Connie Clausen Field for the first time this season Wednesday. White said the team revealed new threads for those in attendance.
“Finally getting to look up and seeing our own fans and family. Everyone in our own state, it was just amazing,” she said.
To catch more Omaha Softball, the team opens its conference play this weekend against South Dakota State.
