OMAHA, Neb – The Millard North Boys Basketball team is coming off back-to-back state titles, but the reigning champions face uncertainty of a new head coach and some fresh players the Mustangs are amping up and ready for the season.
Mike Etzelmiller is the new head coach. He served as the assistant coach for 13 years under the previous head coach Tim Cannon.
Etzelmiller says he’s seen multiple players advance to Division 1 competition and says a trend he hopes to continue.
“We have talented players; I do not know where they will go, I feel like we are a deep team that works hard every day,” Etzelmiller said “We are doing the little things right now open gyms, and skill workouts to get ready and improve.”
The Boys basketball team has had nothing but success, appearing in three consecutive state tournaments and winning Class A two out of the last three years.
After leaving as the Athletic Director at Plattsmouth schools. New Athletic Director Keith Maly says he is optimistic about Etzelmiller as the new head coach.
“I think that he will be successful from the get-go, because he is the type of guy that doesn’t want to fail,” Maly said.
One of the biggest obstacles for the Mustangs is having new faces dawn the blue and white.
The Mustangs start their season next month as their first game is against Fremont at Fremont on December 1st.
