A Local Macaron Business Continues its Growth with the Farmers’ Market

By: Sapphire Bennett OMAHA, Neb. –  Mary Birkentall, owner of Mac’s, has been selling her homemade macarons at the Omaha Farmers’ Market for four years now. Birkentall has developed quite the following and will often sell-out at these markets. 


She says it would be nice to do more events and catering, but appreciates the reserved space and time the market provides.

“It is definitely less pressure and people can just come up to you,” says Birkentall. “It’s kinda just like a one and done.”

Although she began selling her macarons on her own, the Farmers’ Market served as a launching pad for her growing business. Marketing Coordinator Maggie Winton says all kinds of small businesses can get a great start with the market.

“It’s almost better than having a storefront for some folks because if they come to the farmer’s market or if they’re a regular weekly vendor that we have every once and a while, they know they have a dedicated space here at our markets,” Winton says.

For Mary and her customers, the farmers’ market is a place that fosters community and allows any average person to get their start in business-ownership.
