New Health Facility at Benson High School Aims to Serve Students and the North Omaha Community

By Davion Scott-Bell, OMAHA, Neb. – A groundbreaking health initiative is taking shape at Benson High School in North Omaha, and it’s set to transform how students and families access care.

Benson High’s new health facility brings essential services to students, families, and the community.

A new 10,000-square-foot, two-story health facility is now open on the school’s campus. Designed to provide comprehensive services including general medical care, dental services, mental health counseling, and family therapy, the clinic will serve not only Benson students but also their families, faculty, and the broader community.

A Partnership for Health Equity

The facility is a result of a unique collaboration between Omaha Public Schools (OPS) and key local healthcare providers: Charles Drew Health Center, Methodist Health System, Project Harmony, and the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC).

Aimed to allow for all the students and residents of the area that don’t have great transportation to get out to medical help to have medical help close to them.

Hands-On Learning for Future Healthcare Workers

In addition to providing care, the facility also serves as a learning environment for students enrolled in Benson’s Health Professions Academy. These students will have the chance to observe healthcare delivery firsthand, inspiring potential careers in medicine, dentistry, or counseling.

Addressing Access and Equity in North Omaha

For many families in North Omaha, accessing quality healthcare can be a challenge due to transportation issues, cost, or availability. By placing the facility directly on school grounds, OPS, Benson High Foundation and Benson High School hope to increase access and improve long-term outcomes—both in health and education.

The clinic will be open during school hours and offer extended services for families in the evenings and on weekends.

Part of a Larger Vision

The Benson health facility is just one component of Omaha Public Schools’ broader 20-year facilities plan, designed to modernize infrastructure and enhance student support across the district.

Looking Ahead

Services are already being phased in. Omaha Public Schools and their partner organizations believe the Benson health center could serve as a model for other schools and districts across the state.
