Daub and Weitz face off in Board of Regents race

Incumbent Haul Daub and challenger Barbara Weitz each bring a different perspective to the University of Nebraska Board of Regents race. ‘

Daub, a former Omaha mayor and U.S. representative, brings years of political experience to the race, while Barbara Weitz, a former University of Nebraska at Omaha social work professor and community volunteer, is a political newcomer.

Daub, an Omaha native and attorney, was first elected to the Board of Regents in 2012.

“The University of Nebraska is important to me because my career in business and public service was launched from my time in law school at UNL,” Daub said. “Once a Husker, always a Husker.”

Daub said he sees himself as a visionary leader who has set standards to improve the NU system. As mayor, he was responsible for the riverfront revitalization and helped to make the Convention Center and arena a reality. Daub said he also balanced budgets and helped transform downtown Omaha.

Weitz wants to establish education as a priority in Nebraska

“Daub’s skills are more in politics than education,” said Michael Pacholski, UNO adjunct professor. “He doesn’t have the same aspects as Barbara who is more sensitive to the needs of the students.”

Weitz said she believes she has the skillset and experience that the board needs to be successful. Her experiences as a professor help her understand students’ needs.

“Barbara Weitz has more understanding for the community,” said UNO student Jason Albeno. “She has worked for the college and she has lived through other people’s experiences.”

“I feel like I bring a lot of different roles to the board,” Weitz said.

If elected, Weitz said she wants to place a high priority on how to manage and maintain the budget cuts.
