TEDxUNO explores theme of resilience

By Bryan Vomacka

TEDxUNO 2019 was held at the Strauss Performing Arts Center on Saturday, Feb. 16. The theme of the event was resilience.

Many of the speakers had local connections to the Omaha area. They spoke about resilience through a variety of things. Failure, the gender gap, speech impediments, and prison were just a few of the topics discussed.

Physician Sasha Schillcutt spoke about her experiences with failure and how it helped her succeed while Dominique Morgan, a prison reform advocate, talked about his time in prison and how it shaped his life.

Two UNO students spoke at the event. Carrie Anderson detailed her experience growing up with a speech impediment and how it impacted her life. Madison Larimore runs a creative nonfiction-writing project called “HumanKind,” which tells the stories of anyone who wants to be interviewed and aims to increase empathy through storytelling.

Scott Jones, an openly gay minister, recently wrote a book about his life experiences and discussed how resilience helped him throughout his life. Suzanne Adams is an author and life coach who takes theories from quantum physics and applies them to life to help people reach their full potential.
