Nebraska flood recovery efforts are a slow process for those impacted

By Megan Alexander

It’s been one month since record-breaking floods swept through the Midwest, devastating family’s homes and farmer’s lands.

Plattsmouth Resident, Tammie Costanzo, lost everything. As a widow, she is struggling to deal with the cleanup independently. She is thankful for the help of her daughters, neighbors, and pastors at church.

“I had nine feet of water in my house for 17 days straight. My granddaughter also lives here, but she hasn’t stayed the night here since March 13th. Her bed had dead fish in it. We lost 30 years of memories in 24 hours.”

Costanzo said it’s a slow process getting everything back to normal. She mentioned it takes patience to deal with, but she is hopeful her house gets better construction than it had before.

There are many ways to donate to flood relief. One way is to purchase a “Nebraska Strong” t-shirt at Hy-Vee. Matthew McConnell, employee of Hy-Vee, is proud to work at a company that takes the time to assist the victims of the floods.

“We sold a countless number of “Nebraska Strong” shirts, and 100% of all proceeds were donated to flood relief. I’m happy to work for Hy-Vee because not only did they donate shirt money, they had displays of cases of water and gave them out for free. It was pretty special.”
