Snow or no snow, igloos have arrived at The Capitol District

OMAHA – Omaha has already seen its first snow fall this year, and though there is no snow on the ground inside the Capitol District, eight private igloos offer a new way to enjoy food or drinks from the many bars inside the Capitol District.

Each igloo has plenty of blankets and faux fur for customers to stay warm this winter. Seating a party of six, each igloo is available to rent for $100 for 2.5 hours.

Each igloo is equipped with a mini fireplace, lights and blankets to give visitors a comfortable experience as temperatures will begin to drop.

Amanda Frank, Marketing and Events Director of the Capitol District hopes the igloos draw visitors to the district looking to stay safe.

“My hope is that the igloos provide something safe for everyone to do through these long winter months that are coming,” Frank said.

The igloos will replace the Capitol District ice rink this year but Frank said the idea for the igloos came from wanting to keep families safe.

“I’ve seen them I’ve always thought they were a great idea, and I have small children and I’ve always thought, you know what is something I could do that would keep them safe?” Frank said.

One Omaha couple is excited to see the igloos for the first time and are glad the igloos are helping the businesses within the district.

“Yeah, I think it’s a really good opportunity for these bars around here to still make money even with a pandemic still going on,” Tanner Murphy said.

With safety taking top priority this year due to COVID-19, Sam Starke believes the igloos offer a socially distanced way to share drink with friends at Capitol.

“I think it’s a fun way to get out of your house after being stuck in there for so long. And to be able to interact with your friends and be in a safe environment,” Starke said.

The igloos are available to rent weekends from 4 p.m. to 12:30 a.m., and the igloos can be reserved during the week. The attraction will stay in the Capitol District until Valentine’s Day for those looking to celebrate the holidays.
