The Omaha mayoral race continues with primary voting

Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert looks to win a third term in office with the primary election taking place on Tuesday night. Stothert was sworn in her for her first term back in 2013, becoming the first woman in Omaha history to hold the position.

Early votes are being counted at the Douglas County Election Commission as voters have until Tuesday night to submit their ballots. Brian Kruse, Douglas County Election Commissioner, encourages all residents to participate.

“Go to your polling placed on Election Day, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m, there are 174 of them throughout the city and we really encourage, especially those young voters,” Kruse said. “Start your habits early, vote in the election, vote in all the elections, and have your voices heard.”

Jasmine Harris, RJ Neary, Kimara Snipes and Mark Gudgel are Democrats challenging Stothert’s reelection bid. Jim Rogers, Executive Director of the Nebraska Democratic Party, says someone new is needed in office.

“Certainly, by the interest of the number of candidates that are running on the Democratic side, I think that’s shown that the mayor has not delivered for our city in all zip codes across Omaha,” Rogers said.

The two candidates who receive the most votes will be on the ballot for the general election on May 11.
