Important Information on Parking on UNO’s Campus

By: Madison Bonin, Reporter

OMAHA, Neb. – UNO’s campus reopened for the fall semester but many students, faculty and staff have found it difficult to park on campus.

With the return of most classes being in person brings an influx of students, faculty and staff that UNO hasn’t seen for the past two years.

A new sign that was put up at the start of the 2022 school year that changes who is allowed to park in this lot.

UNO student, Lizzie West has experienced this firsthand.

She said, “I know there’s some people in my classes who are newer to UNO that have trouble with finding parking.”

Parking on campus has long been an issue students, faculty and staff have to deal with. But with the rise in cost of the permits that was issued this year has people more frustrated than normal.

Student permits now range from $149 – $299 for the year and staff and faculty permits between $354 – $690. The rise in price averages more than a dollar a month.

Parking and Transit services manager David Peterson denied our interview request and said to not contact anyone else in parking services for an interview citing understaffing as the reason.

Peterson did reach out days later via email to explain the variety of parking and transport options available for students, staff and faculty. All of which were already available on the website.

The chancellor’s office made no comment on the situation and said to speak to the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Business and Finance, Jim Kamm.

A new sign that was put up at the start of the 2022 school year that changes who is allowed to park in this lot.

Mr. Kamm made no comment but said all media requests should be directed to the Office of Strategic Marketing and Communications.

The Office of Strategic Marketing and Communications made the choice to not set up an interview and said the written response David Peterson provided would have to work instead of an on-camera interview.

As parking on campus remains an issue on campus we will continuously follow up on this story.
