OMAHA, Neb. — Band of the Strong hosted a fishing event Sept. 25 that brought children and teens together while giving them an opportunity to connect and work through grief.

The organization was founded by Zach Schafer after he experienced the loss of his father as a child. Schafer said his father was an artist, musician and writer, and that creativity helped him retell and rewrite his own story.

“I grew up and found that those things helped me to retell and rewrite that story,” Schafer said.

The creativity that children and teens painted to deal with grief to show what they are feeling and what art can do to show what words can’t

Schafer said he later had the opportunity to work with children who were also grieving and struggling.

For parents, the impact of the organization can continue beyond its events. Cliff McEvoy said his son has become more willing to talk with him, which has helped McEvoy become a better parent.

How volunteers help at these events for Band of the Strong by not just setting things up but also showing up on time and making sure that everyone who shows up feels welcomed and at home

“It’s made me a better parent because when my son comes home, he’s more willing to talk to me,” McEvoy said.

Through events like the fishing day, Band of the Strong gives children opportunities to connect.
