Omaha college seniors face October deadlines for December graduation

December graduation may still feel months away, but college seniors in Omaha have important deadlines to meet this fall. Missing an application or registration date can add stress — and potentially extra fees — during an already busy semester.

At the University of Nebraska at Omaha, students planning to graduate in December must submit their application for their degree by Oct. 16. The application fee is $35, and students who miss the deadline may face an additional late fee. UNO’s fall commencement is scheduled for Dec. 18 at Baxter Arena.

At Creighton University, the deadline for December graduates to register is Oct. 15. The university lists Dec. 19 as the official degree-conferral date for students verified to graduate that month. The conferral date is separate from the date of a student’s commencement ceremony.

UNO senior Isaac McBee says he still needs to order his cap and gown before December graduation

UNO senior Isaac McBee said he knew he had a deadline coming up, but he was not sure of the exact date. He also had not ordered his cap and gown when he spoke with The Omaha News.

“I knew I had to order cap and gown stuff by October, which I haven’t done yet,” McBee said.

Matthew Schill, director of UNO’s Office of the University Registrar, said students need to make sure their academic requirements are completed before the semester ends. That includes in-progress courses, transfer credits and incomplete work from previous semesters.

“All need to be wrapped up prior to the end of the term,” Schill said.

UNO students preparing to graduate this December should check application deadlines and cap-and-gown ordering details

Graduates should also plan for ceremony attire. UNO students can check with the Maverick Store for cap-and-gown ordering details and prices. For Creighton’s December graduate-school ceremonies, regalia pickup at The Ruth Scott Training Center begins at 2:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 11. Creighton says it orders regalia for participating students.

Students should confirm deadlines, degree requirements, and ceremony details with their own university or academic program. Checking now can help prevent a last-minute scramble as December approaches.
