UNO hockey player claims records

By Phillip Lemen

Senior hockey goaltender Evan Weninger hit the astounding save milestone on Friday, Feb. 8 in Oxford, Ohio. The Mavericks split the series with the Redhawks, winning game one 3-0 and losing game two 2-4. Weninger is now number one in shutouts in UNO hockey history, recording his eighth in the Friday night victory.

“I happened to look up at the scoreboard and they had put it up on CBS Sports’ broadcast,  so it was pretty cool to see it in game… and having my teammates come up to congratulate me was a pretty cool feeling,” Weninger said.

Omaha has two more home series back-to-back, hosting powerhouses St. Cloud State and Denver, and finishing up in Grand Forks against the Fighting Hawks. The NCHC playoffs start the weekend of March 15th, and if Omaha advances, they will play in the Frozen Faceoff in St. Paul, Minnesota March 22-23.

“We’re just trying to take it day-by-day. We’re probably not going to have home ice advantage for the playoffs so we’re just worried about where we finish in the standings and how we can go into whatever rink we have to play in with some confidence and show that we aren’t a team to take lightly,” Weninger said.
