Donny Baarns, the new voice of Omaha Maverick Hockey

By: Harrison Popp

Omaha Athletics announced earlier this year that Donny Baarns would be the new play-by-play voice of the Omaha Maverick hockey team. He assumes the role from his predecessor, Dave Ahlers.

Donny has been broadcasting a variety of sports for over a decade. He stated that he called games for the Fresno Monsters hockey team for seven complete seasons. Originally, he called hockey games with the sole purpose of picking up some spare hours for money. However, now that has turned to a humbling occupation with the Omaha Mavericks.

Donny will assume all play-by-play duties for the upcoming season with color commentator Terry Leahy. Terry has been broadcasting for the Mavericks since the hockey program was conceived. He looks forward to the working relationship with Donny.

Donny comes to Mavericks will dynamic experiences across the nation. He voice is familiar nationwide with commercial work with Budweiser, Microsoft, and T-Mobile along with calling Major League Baseball games for the Oakland Athletics. Additionally, he has local experiences with the Creighton Bluejays and the Omaha Storm Chasers.

Donny looks with great anticipation toward his first season with the Mavericks and maintaining the high standards Dave Ahlers, his predecessor, instilled. His first regular season broadcast will be this Friday night as the Omaha Mavericks face off against Alabama Huntsville at Baxter Arena.
